The University of Delhi (DU), informally known as the University of Delhi, is a collegiate public research university located in New Delhi, India. It was established in 1922 by an Act of the Central Legislative Assembly. It was one of the first institutions to be granted the status of Institute of Eminence.

As a collegiate university, its main functions are divided between the academic departments of the university and affiliated colleges. Consisting of three colleges, two faculties, and 750 students at the time of its inception, the University of Delhi has since grown to become the largest institution of higher education in India and in the world. The university has 16 faculties and 86 departments distributed across its north and south campuses. It has 77 affiliated colleges and four other institutions. The Vice-President of India serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

DU is considered one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country. Since its inception in 1922, it has grown into one of the largest universities in India with over 86 academic departments, 16 faculties and 132,435 regular students (114,494 undergraduate and 17,941 postgraduate). Delhi University offers affiliation to 85 colleges and 5 other institutions spread across Delhi.

Initially, only four colleges existed in Delhi at that time, namely St. Stephen’s College (1881), Hindu College (1899), Zakir Hussain Delhi College (established in 1792, then known as Delhi College) and Ramjas College ( 1917), who was later affiliated with the university. It has one of the largest number of publications in Indian universities. According to the NIRF 2020 ranking, DU has been ranked 11th and 18th best university in India under the category ‘University’ and ‘Overall’ respectively.

The University is spread over two campuses in Delhi, namely the South Campus and the North Campus. In addition, it holds the membership of several reputed organizations, such as Association of Indian Universities (AIU), Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) and Universities  DU admissions to various UG, PG and doctoral programs 2020 both admission and admission are- based.
